Strategic Air Force base anchoring West Texas air power.

Opened

Location
Abilene, United States
Dyess Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located adjacent to Abilene, Texas. It serves as the host installation for the 7th Bomb Wing, which operates the B-1B Lancer supersonic bomber, making it one of the primary B-1B bases in the Air Force inventory. The base also hosts the 317th Airlift Group, which flies the C-130J Super Hercules, giving Dyess a dual mission of strategic bombing and tactical airlift. As a military installation, it is not open to commercial passenger traffic, and the IATA code DYS is primarily used for military and logistics purposes. Dyess AFB plays a significant role in U.S. power projection and global strike capabilities. The base is named after Lieutenant Colonel William Edwin Dyess, a World War II pilot and prisoner of war who died in a training accident in 1943.
