The Ilyushin Il-18 is a four-engined turboprop airliner developed in the Soviet Union during the late 1950s. It entered service with Aeroflot in 1959 and became a mainstay of Soviet and Eastern Bloc air travel for decades, renowned for its reliability and long range. The aircraft was widely exported to airlines in socialist countries across Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Cuba. Its robust construction and ease of maintenance made it popular in regions with limited infrastructure. Although largely retired from passenger service, some Il-18 airframes continue to operate in freighter, survey, or military roles in a small number of countries.
