The De Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter is a single-engine, high-wing utility aircraft developed in Canada during the early 1950s. Designed as a larger successor to the DHC-2 Beaver, it was intended to carry greater payloads into short, unprepared airstrips in remote and wilderness environments. It first flew in 1951 and entered production shortly thereafter.
The Otter earned a strong reputation for reliability and versatility, serving in a wide range of roles including passenger transport, cargo, medevac, parachuting, and survey operations. It can be fitted with wheels, skis, or floats, making it adaptable to diverse terrain and climate conditions.
Although original Pratt & Whitney R-1340 piston-powered examples are now rare, many airframes have been converted to turbine power — most commonly with the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A engine — extending operational life significantly. The de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter is a single-engined, high-wing, propeller-driven, short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft developed by de Havilland Canada. It was conceived to be capable of performing the same roles as the earlier and highly successful Beaver, including as a bush plane, while also being a larger aircraft. The type certificate of the aircraft is now owned by the De Havilland Canada founded in 2019.
