The Canadair Challenger 600 is a wide-cabin business jet developed by Canadair of Canada, with its origins in a design by Bill Lear. Canadair acquired the LearStar 600 concept in 1976 and developed it into a distinctive aircraft featuring a supercritical wing and a spacious fuselage cross-section that set new standards for business aviation comfort. The aircraft entered service in the early 1980s and spawned a highly successful family of derivatives, including the Challenger 601 and 604, which introduced winglets and upgraded engines. Bombardier acquired Canadair in 1986 and continued developing the platform, which eventually led to the larger Bombardier Global Express series. The Challenger series became widely used by corporate operators, charter companies, and government/military customers around the world. The Bombardier Challenger 600 series is a family of business jets developed by Canadair after a Bill Lear concept, and then produced from 1986 by its new owner, Bombardier Aerospace. At the end of 1975, Canadair began funding the development of LearStar 600, and then bought the design for a wide-cabin business jet in April 1976. On 29 October, the programme was launched, backed by the Canadian federal government, and designed to comply with new FAR part 25 standards.
