The Aero Commander is a family of twin-engine, high-wing light aircraft originally developed by the Aero Design and Engineering Company in the late 1940s. The design became highly regarded for its rugged construction, superior performance, and versatility, serving roles in corporate transport, cargo, and utility operations. The line passed through several corporate owners including Rockwell Standard, North American Rockwell, Rockwell International, and eventually Gulfstream American. The Commander series encompasses numerous variants, including the 500, 560, 680, and 700 series, powered by various piston and turbocharged engines. The ICAO code AC68 broadly refers to the piston-engined variants of the Commander family. These aircraft were popular with business travelers and small operators throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s due to their high-wing configuration providing excellent visibility and short-field performance. Production of the piston Commander variants largely wound down by the early 1980s as turboprop successors took over the market segment.
