Antonov AN-26

The Antonov An-26 is a Soviet-designed twin-turboprop transport aircraft developed as an improved successor to the An-24, featuring a distinctive rear-loading ramp designed for cargo operations. First flying in 1969, it was built at the Kyiv Mechanical Plant in Ukraine and produced in significant numbers for military and civil operators across the Soviet Union and allied states. The aircraft is versatile, capable of carrying cargo, paratroopers, or passengers, and can operate from unpaved or semi-prepared airstrips. Its rear ramp allows direct loading of vehicles and heavy equipment, making it especially valuable in remote or undeveloped regions. The An-26 has seen widespread use across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, operated by military forces and smaller regional airlines. Despite its age, many examples remain in active service, though fleet attrition and aging airframes have reduced numbers considerably.
